Line It Up! is a short classroom routine song that gives children clear cues for forming a line and walking together: find a spot, leave room, keep hands to yourself, face the route, and wait until it is time to move.
What the song teaches
The lyrics turn lining up into a sequence children can rehearse: find a place, allow space for the next person, keep hands with your own body, orient toward the route, and use quiet walking steps. The repeated chorus makes the key language easy to revisit without adding a long list of directions. “Ready to move?” should still mean that the teacher or responsible adult has checked the group and given the departure cue; the music ending is not permission to leave.
A classroom rehearsal you can use
Teach the routine when the class is calm rather than during a rushed transition. Mark the place where the line begins, name the destination, and model the whole sequence once at an ordinary walking pace. Then rehearse in short rounds:
- Find the spot: Students walk from their seats or carpet places to the line area without racing for a preferred position.
- Make space: Each student checks that bodies, backpacks, and mobility equipment have comfortable room. Space can vary by person.
- Choose a hands position: Hands may rest by the sides, hold a folder, or stay together in front. The useful rule is that hands and belongings remain with the student’s own body.
- Orient to the route: “Face to the front” can mean noticing the direction of travel. It does not require eye contact, a fixed gaze, or one exact body posture.
- Wait for the cue: The adult checks attendance and the route, then gives a consistent phrase or visual signal to begin walking.
Play the song in the classroom for teaching and practice. Stop the screen and audio before opening the door. There should be no screen to watch in the hallway; students need to attend to the route, nearby people, doors, corners, and adult directions. Once cleared to depart, walk at a pace the full group can sustain. Use one quiet reminder—such as “keep your space”—instead of talking over the whole transition.
Flexible ways to participate
A successful routine is safe and understandable, not a perfectly straight line. A student may use a mobility device, stand at the side or back, join after loud audio ends, check a picture schedule, wear approved hearing protection, or receive support from an adult. Offer the song at lower volume, use only the chorus, show lyric or picture cues, or practice with no audio. Singing and dancing are optional. Follow individual support plans and leave enough turning and stopping room for everyone.
Adapt the lesson by grade
With preschoolers, teach only two actions at first: find the spot and leave space. Practice from the carpet to the door, stop there, and celebrate completion of the sequence. In kindergarten, add a picture cue for hands, front, and wait; rehearse the teacher’s departure signal separately so the end of the music does not launch the line.
For grades 1–2, ask students to explain why spacing, quiet steps, and a shared pace help the group move through a school where other classes are working. Let them identify where bunching happens and propose a neutral reminder. In grade 3, invite students to evaluate the routine after a real transition: Was the cue clear? Did the pace work for everyone? What single adjustment should the class try next time? Use their observations to refine the procedure rather than turning rehearsal into a consequence.
