Transition Time! helps children practice ending one classroom activity and getting ready for another. Use its cleanup, breathing, and space-check cues to teach a predictable routine between centers, circle time, table work, and other parts of the day.
What Transition Time! teaches
Changing activities involves more than moving to another spot. Children may need to finish a turn, protect an unfinished project, return materials, and understand what comes next. The song gives teachers simple language for that sequence: “Clean it up, put it away,” “Take a breath, check your space,” and “One thing ends, another begins.” Pair those words with concrete directions for your classroom rather than expecting the music to explain every job.
The video is one minute and two seconds long, but that is not a cleanup deadline. Some jobs and some students need more time. The break’s “Nice and easy / Nice and slow” is a useful reminder to practice at a safe, manageable pace instead of racing the last note.
Teach the routine in a calm practice round
Before using the song during a busy changeover, demonstrate with a small set of classroom materials. Tell students what is ending and name the next activity. For example: “Blocks are finishing. We will put the blocks in their bins, then meet on the carpet for a story.” Show the destination or a picture cue so the next mission has a specific meaning.
- Prepare: Give a brief advance warning. Explain whether unfinished work can stay, be photographed under school policy, or be stored in a designated place.
- Put away: Model one material’s home and one clear cleanup job. Children can return what they used without being responsible for clearing the entire room.
- Pause and check: Offer a comfortable breath or a quiet pause. Check that belongings are secure and the route has room. Breathing along, singing, and dancing are optional.
- Begin the next step: Give the class a clear cue to move or change tasks. Students may stay seated if the next activity happens at the same table.
Rehearse once with only a few objects, then ask which instruction was clear and which needs another example. A short practice with manageable materials is more useful than starting with every center open and hoping students can follow the song unaided.
Use it across the school day
For centers to circle time, show where the materials belong and what students should do on arrival at the carpet. For art to reading, allow time for wet work to be stored and hands to be cleaned before the next task. For a seated switch from drawing to listening, demonstrate putting pencils down and moving the paper aside; a new activity does not always require a new physical place.
Preview the video while students can watch safely. During movement, keep attention on materials, classmates, and the route rather than on a screen. If the next activity involves leaving the classroom, stop media and use your normal adult-supervised travel procedure. For a dedicated line-up lesson, use Line It Up!.
Make the change accessible
Offer picture cues, spoken instructions, reduced volume, or a no-audio version of the same steps. Allow extra processing time and accessible material storage. A student may need help saving work, an adult-supported first step, or a quieter starting position. Follow individual support plans and avoid public countdowns or comparisons about who finished first.
If a child is disappointed to stop, acknowledge it while keeping the next action clear: “You wanted more building time. Your model can go on the save shelf. Then choose a carpet spot.” Do not promise a later return unless it is actually planned.
